Filaments Art Collective are a group of five Kent based contemporary artists - Elizabeth Burman, Karen Crosby, Rosie James, Ruth Payne and myself.
We create art events and installations using a range of media including light, thread, projections, paper, neon and reflective materials.
Our inaugural show light show in January 2020 took place in the ancient church of St Mary’s at Burham. Since then, we have held an annual event at St Mary’s and received several commissions.
Our works are often site-specific, responding to the local history, the natural environment, and the architecture of the buildings/spaces themselves. Depending on the project we might create works individually or work collaboratively.
A brief selection of our projects are presented below.

In the absence of a studio space in Medway, we took to the streets for Medway Open Studios 2024. Each artist designed their own trolley in response to personal narratives ranging from female empowerment, sense of place and wildlife conservation concerns. The trolley performance took place on the streets of old Chatham during the weekend of 13/14 July.
My contribution was a Croque-en-bird-bouche trolley highlighting the plight of song birds in those countries where they are eaten as a delicacy, threatening their population.
To mark the summer solstice we transformed the historic church of St Mary’s at Burham into a celebration of midsummer. Suspended insulation blankets filled the church with gold and silver marking the transition from the longest day to the longest night of the year.
We invited members of the public to participate in a cyanotype workshop, creating prints using the flora from the churchyard and developed using UV rays from the sun.
